Sporting confirms the European title: third overall, the most victorious in Portugal

After two years, nothing has changed. Sporting continues to be the European Champion after the 2018-19 victory and the cancellation of 2019-20. The team of Paulo Freitas won with great stubbornness after being at a 2-0 disadvantage their third Euroleague. In overtime the masterpiece, thanks to the goals of Perez and Romero. Romero and Girao are the “Azemad MVP”, respectively the best player and best goalkeeper voted for by the accredited press. It’s the third victory and became the first Portuguese club with three victories in EuroLeague, overtaking Porto and Benfica.

The first half with Porto immediately flying to 2-0 in three minutes with Rafa Costa’s goal deflecting a shot from long range and Gonçalo Alves’ direct shot. Sporting Clube de Portugal managed to halve the gap thanks to Platero’s deflection on Romero’s shot. The whitegreens gain meters and become much more dangerous than the first period. Ferran Font was sent off for roughing in the centre of the area in the first half, but Alves being stopped by Girao. Reinaldo Garcia is also shown a blue card, and Perez’s direct shot fails to pass Malian. They finished the first half in 3 vs 3 on the rink. In the second half Sporting’s pressure is always high but the two goalkeepers get the better of the many shots from medium and long-distance. Perez made good use of a powerplay in the 12th to make it 2-2, but there are also two direct shots (three total) not made by the title holders.
Despite everything, Freitas’ team managed to give the decisive shoulder in overtime, especially in the first five minutes, when they scored twice, once with Perez and one with Romero on direct shooting. Alves put his team back in the second half but an error was fatal in the final, when the goalkeeper was taken off, but it was a technical error and the red card was given, as per the rules, to the coach and captain. Sporting is back for the third time European Champion.
